Zadie Jumpsuit hacked into a wrap top

In this post, I will walk you through how I used the Zadie jumpsuit pattern to make a wrap top

I have been dreaming about making this Zadie hack wrap top since I saw it on Thread snips's blogpost a while ago. Catherine hacked both the sleeves and the length of the bodice to get her great wrap top.

Choosing the fabric

I have been dreaming about this top in a black ikat (maybe influenced by Cathrine'e orange ikat fabric). I had the perfect remnant leftover after I made my Jolene Shirt Dress by Ready to Sew. I think this top would work great with so many different woven fabrics. You can try this with a lyocell, chambray, poplin, cotton lawn and Rayon/Viscose. I am sure I will be making more in other fabrics!! :)

Hacking the Zadie Jumpsuit Pattern

To make this hack, I highly recommend you first make sure that the bodice of the jumpsuit fits you perfectly. To see how I fit my bodice, please refer to my previous blog post here.

Once you have the jumpsuit bodice fit you perfectly, the hack is very simple.

Pattern pieces needed

1. Front

2. Back

3. Sleeves (optional)

4. Ties

5. Neck binding

Step 1

Make all the changes to the bodice pieces as you would for the jumpsuit.

Step 2

Trace out both the front and back bodices onto a fresh pattern paper.

Step 3

Increase the length of the front and back bodices. I increased the bodice by 3 inches. Go ahead and increase it at the length you prefer.

On the front bodice, you can increase the length in 2 places, marked as a or b. in the illustration above. Both would be OK. I decided to increase the length at point a.

Step 4

Make sure to mark the drill hole already present in the pattern. Add a new notch at the end of the old hem. This will become the new opening for the ties.

Step 5

Follow all the same instructions to sew the bodice together. DO NOT PLEAT the. bodice. We do not need this shaping for the top.

Step 6

I love the idea of having the sleeves on my top, but it is optional. You can now sew sleeves on if you choose to. I french seamed the sleeves.

Step 7

When you sew the front and back bodices together, sew up to the drill hole and backstitch. Now start to sew again at the new notch we made until the new hemline.

Step 8

Finish the seams the way the instructions recommend. I french seamed all seams except for the right seam. I finished them open like recommended and sewed around the opening as illustrated below. This will be opening through which the tie. will come out.

Step 9

Sew in the ties as instructed.

Step 10

For the neckline, I decided to finish it as a bias facing rather than a bias binding. I prefer this finish because I feel this is easier to have a very professional finish.

Here is how I did it. -

1. Pin the facing on the neckline right sides together

2. Sew the facing to the neckline with 1cm seam allowance

3. Press the facing towards the seam allowance

4. Fold the facing over to the right side of the fabric until the facing edge touches the seam you just sewed

5. Fold over once more to enclose all raw seams

6. Edge-stitch the facing on the the bodice.

Note - be careful to catch the ties into the seams when sewing!

Step 11

Hem the top to the length you like. I did a 1inch hem. Give this garment a good press and Voila!! you have a hacked wrap top.

Techniques you will learn

If you have not already sewn the Zadie before, you will learn to

1. modify pattern pieces

2. sewing and turning ties

3. Adding sleeves (if you choose to)

4. finishing a neckline with bias binding or bias facing.

Please write in the comments section below if you have any further questions or suggestions.

Styling

In this post, I have styled my wrap. top with my high waisted peppermint wide leg pants made out of lightweight Malkha cotton and black Chelsea boots from Cole Haan.

Get Inspired

Finally, I loved making this top. It is extremely flattering on multiple body types and such a quick and simple sew. It is also a perfect project for those remnants! I leave you here with more pictures to inspire you to make your own!!
