Paulette by Fibremood magazine #13. Launch day Link Party 17

In this post, I will walk you through how I made this beautiful shirt for the latest fibremood magazine launch party #thehemlineeclectic #fibremood #linkparty17

The Fabric - Tencel Twill

This is a beautiful tencel twill in a dark hunter green that was gifted to me by Karleen from PDX sewing studio in exchange for this blog post. All reviews and comments are my own.

First of all, I love Karleen's fabric collection. Her choice of fabric, the designs and the colors are very much to my style. I am always browsing her store. More than that, I love to support small fabric shops. Thank you Karleen!

My love for tencel is immense. I want to make every garment with it if I can. This beautiful drapey twill is absolutely gorgeous and a perfect choice for this shirt with the amazing ruffle detail.

The fabric was very easy to work with. I washed it and line dried it before cutting into it. Although Tencel is a natural fibre, it did not like the heat from my iron much. I ironed using a press cloth on the wrong side.

The Pattern

While I was in conversation with Karleen about collaborations, I got the email about the next Fibremood link party. What is that you ask?

Fibremood, if you don't already know, is an amazing indie pattern company that releases sewing magazines with over 12-15 patterns in each. You can also buy each pattern individually online. I love their esthetics and style and I have made many of these designs.

Before the launch of the magazine, Fibremood will send the patterns out to a few sewists and we get to choose one pattern from the list. We make the pattern and share on the release date. It is so exciting that all you sewists will get to see a multiple variations of the patterns on the day of release inspiring you to make your own! :)

This time, I am lucky to be the few who got the preview of all the patterns. This edition of the magazine is incredible. I loved so many of their patterns, it was so hard to choose. I will deftly purchase this magazine so I can try out all the other patterns.

Specifically looking for patterns that are very new to my wardrobe, I fell in love with Paulette.

The shirt features a princess seam, a collar stand, a rounded yoke and this beautiful ruffle that runs all the way around. The ruffle itself is larger at the shoulders and tapers at the back and at the hem of the shirt. The shirt also has a double pleated cuff for a great fit. Buy the pattern here with my affiliate link. I get a small commission at no cost to you.

Looking through the size charts, I chose to make a size 38 (My usual size for Fibremood patterns).

As usual, for my short waisted torso, I have to shorten the shirt by 1 inch. I shortened it across all the front panels and the back. I did not do any other modification to the pattern.

Sewing Paulette

The pattern was a pretty straightforward sew. Everything came together very well and fit perfectly. I did make a toile first before cutting into this beautiful fabric.

The instructions asks you to first sew the front button panels to the yoke and then ruffle to this panel all around. Sewing this was ok. But then, you have to sew the back to the front side panels and then sew the whole front and back together with the ruffle in between. I had to stop and think about how to place each of these pieces so you can sew them. You will have 3 layers on the whole to sew through. So slow down and think before pinning! :)

It was hard to find good buttons for this color. I looked through multiple stores for the perfect buttons and finally settled on this 3/8inch mother of pearl buttons that are my usual go to. Somehow they go with every fabric and design and for both men and women's ware.

Techniques you will learn

This is for an intermediate sewist or for a very bold beginner. If you have sewn a short before, you will find the additional pricess seams and the ruffle adds the extra learning for you. If you sew this pattern you will learn to

1. Fit princess seams

2. Gather the ruffle and sew it in between 2 layers

3. Sew a cuff with buttons

4. Sew a rounded collar stand

5. Sew buttonholes and buttons

Styling

In this post, I have styled my Paulette with a RTW work pants from banana republic, a matching skinny belt and my brown ankle boots from Cole Haan.

Get Inspired

I love all fibremood patterns. I have so many patterns in my stash and I am constantly making more. I highly recommend you check them out. They also have wonderful style ideas that suits different body types. Paulette was such a fun sew, I leave you here with more pictures to inspire you to sew it up!
